VTCT (ITEC) Level 3 Certificate in Microdermabrasion Treatments


Qualification Aims and objectives

The main aim of the VTCT (ITEC) Level 3 Certificate in Microdermabrasion Treatments is to enable learners to gain the necessary practical and theoretical skills in order to provide microdermabrasion treatments to the general public and to gain employment in the beauty therapy industry.


Learning Outcome


The main skills the learner will perform are:

Microdermabrasion treatments - to include consultation, skin analysis, recognising contraindications and contra-actions, carrying out relevant tests prior to treatment and adapting the treatment to the client’s needs.

The learner will also learn about related health and safety and client care and communication which is essential in order to work and be successful in the industry.

This qualification also provides:

The related knowledge and understanding required to perform the microdermabrasion skills listed above effectively in particular the functions of the microdermabrasion equipment and common diseases and disorders that may affect when a client should or should not receive treatment.


Entry Requirements


Pre-requisite entry requirements Learners who wish to undertake this qualification must also achieve the VTCT (ITEC) Level 2 Award in Infection Prevention (COVID-19) for Clinical Aesthetics qualification or a regulated equivalent.

It is recommended that learners must hold a Level 2 Diploma for Beauty Specialists or equivalent.

This qualification is suitable for learners aged 16 and over and is designed to provide occupational

competence at level 3.

It also provides a sound platform into further training at level 3 and 4.

This qualification is for learners who want to work within the beauty industry.

Opportunities for Progression


Opportunities for progression Once learners have achieved the VTCT (ITEC) Level 3 Certificate in Microdermabrasion Treatments they may progress on to other VTCT (ITEC) or equivalent qualifications at level 3 for example:

  • Level 3 Diploma in Body Treatments

  • Level 3 Diploma in Facial Electrical Treatments

  • Level 3 Diploma in Epilation

  • There are opportunities for a beauty therapist specialising in microdermabrasion treatments to find employment in a variety of areas:

This qualification has mapped to National Occupational Standards where they exist and has ensured that best practice in the workplace has been reflected in the qualification.


Qualification structure


To be awarded the VTCT (ITEC) Level 3 Certificate in Microdermabrasion Treatments, learners must achieve the mandatory unit.


The minimum GLH required to achieve this qualification is 45.

The minimum TQT required to achieve this qualification is 123.

The qualification consists of 1 mandatory unit with a total of 45 hours of Guided Learning (GL) to achieve the full qualification.




All treatment evidence, internal assessments, and underpinning knowledge must be completed prior to the final practical examination.

Practical examination


Pass 60%-74%

Merit 75%-89%

Distinction 90%-100%


Theory examination

All theory tests must be conducted in a controlled environment and follow the procedures defined by VTCT (ITEC). The theory tests will be set and marked by VTCT (ITEC).

Portfolio of evidence

 Learners are required to provide a portfolio of evidence containing treatments and/or case studies that they have performed on clients during their training under the supervision of the lecturer who will monitor the quality of the treatments in order to ensure that they meet the criteria.

3 clients x 3 case studies.

The learner will need to complete a client consultation form as evidence that they performed the required number of treatments during their training as they form part of the internal assessment for the qualification.

The final external practical examination will be carried out by the external examiner at the end of the period of learning. The external examiner will also verify a sample of the treatment evidence and internal assessment.
